Dates:1/1/1977 - 3/1/2013
Album Info:Covers Long Island RR freight operations primarily in the 1980's. Power during this time period was mostly the 8 remaining C420's from the 1968 order, numbered 222-229, equipped with Hi Ad trucks. MP15AC's were also used in freight service, and rotated in and out from passenger service, so any of the 23 units, 150-172, could appear.

Local power
Title:  Local power
Description:  Long Island had a small yard at Pinelawn. The power there was usually an MP 15, but occasionally would be one or two C 420s. Today I got lucky and caught a pair of Centuries there. Note the maintenance trucks at right. LIRR kept the blue/yellow on its vehicles long after the trains went to blue and white.

RF 62 nears Riverhead
Title:  RF 62 nears Riverhead
Description:  RF 62 is almost to where it will do most of its work today, passing Calverton, one of the more unremarked points on the LIRR. There is not much here at this time, just some relay rail. There was once a station, now long gone. Trains quit stopping here in the 70s.

Rural scene
Title:  Rural scene
Description:  Whod have figured this pastoral view for Long Island?? It was already a lot more built up by this time than when I was a kid in the 60s, but there were a few places scenes like this could still be seen. A pair of C 420s rolls RF 65 toward Huntington and Hicksville

Going back to the train
Title:  Going back to the train
Description:  RF 64 has run as far east as its going to on the Port Jeff branch today, and is now running around its train to start back as RF 65. That train more often got a pair of MP 15s, but occasionally would get a pair of Alcos. Im not complaining about the substitution.

Sign of days gone by
Title:  Sign of days gone by
Description:  The building behind RF 63 is the Long Island Potato Exchange, once a huge deal on the Island. As late as the 1950s, solid trains of potatoes would be sent west from Riverhead. Better roads and higher real estate values meant fewer potatoes, and most of them now go by truck. Imagine three or four C 420s and 90 cars of potatoes-what a sight!!

Working the team track
Title:  Working the team track
Description:  Once a common sight in many towns, the team track had become a rare feature. Riverhead still had one(as did Queens Village, though I dont recall seeing any cars spotted there in the 80s), here being switched by RF 62s C 420s. The crews on this train did not get radios, so hand signals were the standard way for the trainmen to communicate. It was a real lesson in old style railroading.

Farm like scene
Title:  Farm like scene
Description:  The east end was once farm land, but by the late 80s, much of it had been sold off for development as real estate values became greater than the agricultural value. Manorville seemed to have escaped that trend even in the late 80s, as this scene of a red house in a rural setting shows. RF 63 rolls past behind the usual pair of C 420s.

Title:  Potatoes!!
Description:  RF 63 gets ready to go west as it sits in front of what was once one of LIRRs prime traffic sources-the Suffolk Potato Exchange. The LIRR at the end of WW II would ship 110 car produce blocks from Suffolk County, one of Americas main potato producers. Now it all goes by truck, whats left of it.

Just passing through
Title:  Just passing through
Description:  Youd never know it to see the place now, but Manorville was once an important junction on the LIRR. There was a branch here that split from the Main Line, connecting to the Montauk Branch at Eastport. It was commonly used by trains going to the Hamptons and east. It was abandoned in 1949; Manorville was never the same. RF 63 passes through without even breaking its pace.

Not much of a station
Title:  Not much of a station
Description:  To be fair, there was not much traffic there, and I doubt Yaphank ever had much of a station to begin with. This bus shelter affair is what serves in 1987 as RF63 rolls past
