Album Info:I lived in Endicott NY from 1988 through 2006, an interesting time to be a rail photographer on the former Erie Lackawanna. This album shows Conrail trains on the former EL Susquehanna Division from Endicott to Gang Mills, as well as some connected lines, such as the ex LV Ithaca Branch and Lehigh Line in nearby PA, and the ex NYC line from Corning to Wellsboro PA

Olympic Trials
Title:  Olympic Trials
Description:  Conrail painted two units to honor the bicycle qualifying events for the 1992 Olympics. The trials were held in Altoona, so it was a show of local pride for the many employees at Juniata. The other unit was an SD40-2. This one, the SD 50, is trailing on OIBU at Tioga Center.

Description:  This area has seen a lot of changes. You wouldnt know it from this photo, but there was a double track main line to the left of the train up til 1959, that of the Lackawanna. Gone without a trace, 33 years later. The bridge in the foreground would be replaced with a culvert in a couple of years when Conrail single tracked the line here. Today's view is of OIBU, a short 24 cars of it, seen from the NY 352 overpass.

Along the rocks
Title:  Along the rocks
Description:  The set up here at Gibson is rock wall, Southern Tier Line, now on the Lackawanna alignment, NY 17 on the Erie alignment, with the Chemung River, out of the picture, to the far right. When New York state built the 4 lane here, there were a lot of changes made to the landscape. As it was, this was the location where the Erie and DLW met and ran side by side to Horseheads, and to some extent, all the way to Binghamton. After 1959, the DLW was abandoned between here and the west side of Binghamton, taking the Erie between the two places.

The track going out of the picture to the far left is the connection to the ex NYC line to Jersey Shore PA. That line originally ran on the other side of the Tioga River at this point. The connection was put in when the Erie and NYC were relocated out of downtown in 1951.

Today it has 44 general freight ahead of its 48 racks, so either the merchandise was really light and they combined it with OIBU, or it was really heavy and this was overflow. We see it at Waverly passing the iconic Ted Clarks Busy Market, which was still there when I visited this past July.

In this case, its the Chemung River, which we see at left from the connector bridge at Wellsburg in this view of ML 401 approaching the automatic signal 266-1. In another month, the weather will warm up enough to cause a lot of snow melt, which will put the river at the bottom of this bridge, helping create a massive ice dam.
