Coming home
Title:  Coming home
Description:  The dodger, L 102, pauses by the Watts yard office before yarding his train. I heard the train blowing for the crossings in Siloam Springs, headed down here to see this view. It would be the first of three trains this afternoon, though the next one would be a while.

Round the curve
Title:  Round the curve
Description:  I caught up with the coal train just south of the yard office, getting this shot of it coming around the sweeping curve at MP 237, the second unit, a Grinstein SD 70, now in view. Id see two of these now hard to find units today(actually three, the second coal train had one that had been repainted.)

View from above
Title:  View from above
Description:  I had enough time to get down toward MP 239, where there area couple of road cuts that were done when US 59 was widened to four lane several years ago. One of them isnt that hard to climb, and I can still move OK, mostly, for a 64 year old fat guy. So up I went, getting this shot from up above.

Rolling by the mill
Title:  Rolling by the mill
Description:  A shot I like to do in Westville is at the HJ Baker feed mill downtown. The coal train passes the silos as it heads south.

DPU
Title:  DPU
Description:  Coal trains all have DPUs, so I moved north of the feed mill to get this shot of the three rear units as they pushed south.

Another one
Title:  Another one
Description:  I decided to head home after chasing the TXUX train to Westville, since there wasnt likely to be another train for a while. To my surprise, I heard a train in the trees just north of Watts, so I did a quick turn around to catch him rolling up to the yard office.

Holding, dark side
Title:  Holding, dark side
Description:  The coal train was to hold for a northbound, which was going to be a while, since the previous southbound was probably not yet to Stilwell, the next possible meet point. I got this shot of it from the shoulder of US 59, getting the nose in sun, the rest of the train in a dark side contrast as it waited at CP South Watts. Note the switch lined for the siding. The northbound will likely work here, accessing the yard from the siding.

Meeting on the fly
Title:  Meeting on the fly
Description:  I heard a horn from the house-in Siloam Springs-but was in the middle of something, so could not get out right away. I took off as soon as I could, hoping to catch the southbound. I did, but not til he was coming around the curve into Stilwell. My shot was going to be at the station, so I made a bee line down US 59 through town. On the way, I encountered this northbound empty AEPX train, which I shot through my windshield. Not pretty, but it shows the meeting train.

The quarry
Title:  The quarry
Description:  The southbound Id heard from the house is now in my sights, passing the station at Stilwell. My goal today was to get down to Bunch to do a shot Ive been looking at for a while, so I would follow this train to Cave Springs, a dozen miles on. There was a DPU on this train, probably a BNSF unit with a couple of KCS units, but I didn't see it for chasing.

Front and back
Title:  Front and back
Description:  The TXUX coal train rolls away from me toward the home signal at CP South Stilwell, as the DPU on the AEPX train nears the leaders on the southbound.

Catch the flag
Title:  Catch the flag
Description:  The southbound stopped where I could see between two of its cars. I caught the flank of the UP unit that was the DPU on the northbound between them.

Approach
Title:  Approach
Description:  As I mentioned earlier, I wanted to get a shot of the southbound at one of a couple of spots near Cave Springs and Bunch. I heard the dispatcher talking to the train, saying hed be meeting one at Cave Springs. I checked the signal, to see yellow over red. OK, the northbound is in the picture. I grabbed a shot, and heade to a spot I wanted to do in Bunch, five miles on.

Long view
Title:  Long view
Description:  I got down to Bunch, and scoped out a couple of positions, this one giving me a panoramic view, and allowing me to get back to Cave Springs in time to shoot the meet with the coal train. There are a couple of crossings south of there, and the long valley is a great echo chamber. What a sound!! 261 rolls north behind a now typical mix of power. This would be the only good shot I got of this train.

Close but no cigar
Title:  Close but no cigar
Description:  Trains and Railroads of the Past runs an item by that name where a photo is otherwise good, except for some glaring error, or mishap that mars it. In this case, I was trying to shoot the nose of the leader on this northbound passing the signal at CP South Cave Springs. I almost got it!! Just needed to be a little faster.

Roll by
Title:  Roll by
Description:  The conductor waves at the northbound as he gets ready to give them a roll by. The plan was to have this be an entry in the Out and Back album, but this was the end of the chase. I beat it to Stilwell, which I made ahead of the train, which isnt hard to do if you dont drag your feet. I heard the detector at MP 261 go off, but the transmission cut off before I could hear any details. Thats about 3 1/2 miles from Stilwell; the train should have showed in about five more minutes. He must have had a hit on the detector, as 20minutes later, still no northbound. So it goes....
