Album Info:I have reached a point in life where I take what I call "geezer bus tours," which I think needs no explanation: basically a bunch of old folks on a bus going to Branson, or Washington DC, you get the idea. Sometimes I have the chance to get a rail photo from the bus. They're not always the best quality, since I have no control over set up, but sometimes I get something sorta worthwhile.

Westbound in the gloom
Title:  Westbound in the gloom
Description:  A westbound auto rack train holds at a siding near Newkirk NM, behind UP and CSX power. This is where shooting through bus windows really sucks. The light is bad to begin with, and the tinted windows only make it worse. The only thing saving this shot is that the train was sitting still.

Rolling to a meet
Title:  Rolling to a meet
Description:  Elsewhere in this album, we have UP 4340 west in a siding. Heres why he was waiting: this eastbound stack train. The framing on this is perfect. All I needed was a littl sun.

Stacks in the desert
Title:  Stacks in the desert
Description:  A view from the bus as we rolled west, stacks roll east through typical New Mexico scenery. The motion and bounciness of the bus don't help the sharpness, but the biggest handicap is the tinted windows, which drop the shutter speed-or f stop, depending how you're set up-dramatically.

Its not always this good
Title:  Its not always this good
Description:  I am now at the stage of life where I go on "geezer bus trips," in this case to LA to get on a cruise to Hawaii. We took I 40 west, so I had a lot of chance to see trains on the BNSF. I caught this DPU on a westbound stack with a warbonnet. Nice lighting, good view. Its not always this easy. A lot of the time, its catch as catch can, and the results are not ideal. Youll see as you pick through this album.

Looking back
Title:  Looking back
Description:  We passed this eastbound coal train just as it went under I 40. I was able to get a going away shot.

Title:  Grand Canyon F 40
Description:  We stopped in Williams for dinner. I was able to get a shot of this Grand Canyon F 40 as we rolled through town.

Work extra
Title:  Work extra
Description:  A lot of maintenance must be done on a line like Cajon, due to the constant traffic and resulting stress on the physical plant. A UP work train is on the hill, seen from I 15.

Coming up the grade
Title:  Coming up the grade
Description:  Sometimes the angle actually works out OK. The view is from I 15 of a TOFC train. It would have made a better morning shot, and from the road down below, since I could have kept the pole and wires out of the frame.

From the bus
Title:  From the bus
Description:  We stopped in Barstow at a place called Barstow Station. Its not the Casa Del Desierto, the old Harvey House, by any means. Its a gas station/bus station with some fast food and a lot of kitschy shops, and is on the opposite side of the yard from the Harvey House. The up side is that the trains go right past, and are lit most of the day, though not on this gloomy Sunday. This eastbound came by as we were getting ready to leave for LA. The only reason I got a good shot of this is because we had not started moving yet. Note the reflection from the windows.

Autos east
Title:  Autos east
Description:  As we approached our rest break at Barstow, we ran along the tracks for a short distance. For once a train showed when I wanted it, and was able to get a passably decent shot of the power. And-check out that lead unit!! I've seen many a patch paint job, going back to Conrail in the early days, but this is my first X out. Also, the third unit is 3751, but not the one you were hoping for :-)

Climbing the grade
Title:  Climbing the grade
Description:  It was fairly busy the day we came down Cajon into the LA basin. This BNSF freight was climbing to Summit as we descended on i 15.
